Anyways, it's been forever since I've interviewed a dancer so let's meet one of my dance friends Brenna. She's been a huge supporter of me since 2013 and I absolutely adore chatting with her. She is gorgeous, so sweet and super talented. So let's begin!
FR: What style of ballet do you do?
BM: I am trained in Vaganova.
FR: How long have you been dancing?
BM: I started doing baby ballet classes when I was two, and this year will be my fourteenth year dancing!
FR: What got you into dancing?
BM: My mom is a teacher, and she had after school meetings when I was little. My school offered “baby ballet” classes during my mom’s meetings, so she enrolled me. Plus, she thought that I would look cute in a tutu.
FR: How many hours/days do you dance per week?
BM: I dance every day of the week except for Sundays (unless I have rehearsals). I dance an average of 20 hours a week.
FR: What brand/style pointe shoes do you wear?
BM: I use Grishko Maya 1.
FR: Top 3 favourite ballerinas/male dancers?
BM: Jillian VanStone, Marcia Haydee, Alina Cojocaru.
FR: Hobbies outside of ballet?
BM: I play piano, guitar, and dance and sing in my school’s nationally acclaimed Show Choir! My main hobbies include crying over Supernatural, eating as many Oreos as possible, and reading just about any fantasy book.
FR: Have you won any dance awards?
BM: I haven’t. My school doesn’t do competitions, so I’ve never had the chance to win anything.
FR: Favourite ballet company or companies?
BM: The National Ballet of Canada, Kansas City Ballet, Tulsa Ballet.
FR: Favourite ballets?
BM: My dream ballet is Lady of the Camellias, and it is my goal in life to dance Marguerite!
FR: Are you better at turns or leaps?
BM: I’m more of a jumper than a turner because of my “frog legs!”
FR: Variations you've already danced?
BM: Talisman, Bluebird, Spindlers, Dying Swan, Giselle Act 1.
FR: Strengths in ballet (pirouettes, adagio, flexibility, jumps etc...)
BM: I’m a very strong jumper because of my “frog legs.” I have an extremely flexible back, but not very flexible hips.
FR: Role model in the dance world?
BM: Jillian VanStone. When I was 11, I dislocated my knee badly enough that I was stuck in a knee immobilizer for quite some time. We were going through the same thing at the same time and she really helped me get through it! She sent me a personalized pair of her old pointe shoes, and she’s been my inspiration ever since.
FR: Best advice to a new dancer?
BM: Just because you don’t get roles, it doesn’t mean that you aren’t a good dancer. I’ve dealt with the drama and sadness that comes with being scenery in performances, and it’s not the end of the world, even if it feels like it. You’ll get your chance eventually, and if not, it’s okay! Just keep working hard and taking any and all corrections.
FR: What are some of your dance goals?
BM: I hope to have consistent triples by the end of the school year, and I’m really working on my extensions. A few injuries have taken me down recently and I lost a little flexibility. I’m trying to get it back right!
FR: How old are you?
BM: I am 15 years old, but I will be 16 in August.
FR: What is your favourite colour?
BM: Storm grey, but the kind you see when you’re out on a boat in the middle of the ocean. It’s a very calming color!
FR: Do you have any hobbies outside of dance?
BM: I do Show Choir, I sing, I like to watch hockey, bake insane brownies.
FR: What is your favourite song?
BM: This is really hard, because I have a very diverse taste in music. So, I’m just going to list off a few of my favorites! I love anything by Lana Del Rey, but my favorites from her are Carmen, Chelsea Hotel, Body Electric, and The Other Woman. I love My Chemical Romance, Fall Out Boy, and Panic! At the Disco!
FR: What was the last song you listened to?
BM Money Hunny, Lana Del Rey.
FR: What is your favorite movie?
BM: Once again, very hard. I love Labyrinth (Rest in Peace, Goblin King), Anastasia, Jurassic Park/World, and Blackfish.
I love the background in this pic.
