Spotlight On: Jaimi McPeek

Hello my pretties! I hope you all are having a lovely month of April! I still can't believe that the semester ends in five weeks. I'm just ready for summer already! I think I'll be blogging a bit more often come a Wednesday/Sunday schedule. We'll see.
Anyways, today's post is an interview with one of loyal fans Jaimi. This triple threat young lady turns seventeen today so please give her some birthday love on her blog, Dancers Turn Out Better. And with that said, let's get into the interview.

FR: What style of dance do you do?
JM: All kinds! Jazz, tap, hip-hop, ballet, pointe, lyrical, modern, contemporary, and musical theatre.

FR: How long have you been dancing?
JM: 11 years.

FR: What got you into dancing?
JM: My cousin. She was an avid dancer. I came to one of her performances and completely fell in love with dance. She was my inspiration.

FR: How many hours/days do you dance per week?
JM: I dance everyday. I have classes 4 days per week, but I have a Marley Floor at home (my own in-house studio) that I practice on everyday. I dance 11.5 hours at my studio, but if you include the time I dance at home, it is probably close to 20 hours.

FR: What brand/style pointe shoes do you wear?
JM: Gaynor Mindens.

FR: Top 3 favourite ballerinas/male dancers?
JM: Svetlana Zakharova, Dusty Button, and Ethan Stiefel (even though he is retired now, he is amazing!!).

FR: Hobbies outside of dance?
JM: Lots! I scuba dive, sing, act, draw, paint, color, write poetry, study quantum mechanics, study astronomy, study chemistry, make youtube videos, and help animals.

FR: Favourite ballets?
JM: I like them all! I think my favorite would be the first one I ever really knew which would be Swan Lake!

FR: Are you better at turns or leaps?
JM: Hmmmm, I would say leaps.

FR: Variations you've already danced?
JM: Lilac Fairy, Kitri, La Bayadere, La Esmeralda, Pharaoh’s Daughter, and Spartacus.

FR: Role model in the dance world?
JM: My amazing dance teacher!

FR: A struggle you've faced or are facing in ballet that discourages you sometimes?
JM: My mind.

FR:  Best advice to a new dancer?
JM: There is always going to be someone better than you, but don't let that discourage you. Know your personal goals and take a little time each day to reach them. Know that most things will not be easy at first, but with hard work, consistency, and giving it your all, those ‘hard’ steps will become your warmup. Be ready for commitment and giving 110% each and every class. Don’t give up! No matter how much you want to, if it is your passion, you go for it and give it your all. Even if you don't feel confident with steps, show confidence! But most of all, believe in yourself! This will truly show. You have to be your best supporter. Dance is at least 50% mental, so if you are constantly doubting yourself, you wont get anywhere. Never be afraid to try new steps, you have to go outside of your comfort zone to see how good you really are. Don’t worry about messing up, that’s what classes are for. Classes should be a fun place to be learning what you love, make sure you keep it that way and don't overthink it.

FR: What are some of your dance goals?
JM: To be a professional! Dancing is all I want to do with my life. It is a time where I truly feel alive and invincible. The stage is my home.

FR: How old are you?
JM: 17.

FR: Favorite dance movie?
JM: As bad as it sounds, I really haven't seen any dance movies, but I do love Footloose.

FR: Favorite snack to eat during rehearsals?
JM: Probably just a good, old fashioned protein bar.

FR: What motivates you to keep dancing when/if you feel like quitting?
JM: I know I have my heart set on making it out in the professional world, and I won’t ever quit until I get there. Hard work and perseverance makes you successful.

FR: What is your favourite colour?
JM: Purple.

FR: What is your favourite song?
JM: That’s a tough one, I have a lot of songs that I absolutely love, but I think my favorite would be ‘World War Me’ by Theory of a Deadman because I can relate to it very much.

FR: What was the last song you listened to?
JM: Lost Boy by Ruth B (AKA my lyrical song).

FR: What is your favorite movie?
JM: Oh, I am so bad with decisions. I have so many movies I love! I think my favorite movie might have to be The Wolf Of Wall Street.

So beautiful.

 Gorgeous tilt!

When it doubt, tilt it out! #dancerpoblems
